First Arranging Project - Update 2
Hello everyone, and welcome back to my blog about the project that I will be working on for the entire semester. If you are new, welcome! I hope you stick around in the future.
For those that do not know, last week, I began my project of creating a medley of the Halo soundtrack for flute choir. This process involves arranging, rehearsing, and eventually, a live performance/recording session. I learned that starting a project, any project, is something you need to want to do in order to be the most productive.
This week, a lot of what I did was very similar to last week. However, I did not like what I did last week to begin the arrangement. I originally had a held-out bass note until a solo flute came in. It just did not seem like the original track. What did I do to fix that? Scrapped what I had and restarted. Only then could I create something to be prouder of. Now the arrangement begins with the main theme in flute 3, alto, and bass. The medley got a little farther than last week. Following the theme, flutes get added from lowest to highest, building on a chord that I believe is an E9 chord, concluding with all voices but the piccolo dropping out.
Updated pic of beginning of the arrangement.
I also remembered this really cool video I saw of three guys singing the Halo theme in a church and wanted to include it.
Now that this week has concluded, I can go over exactly what was learned. The ability to accept that what you have written is not good is crucial to making progress. Having music I didn’t like within a composition felt like it slowed me down and lowered my motivation. Finale has an option to add and remove measures, so it clearly isn’t forbidden. Lastly, I believe that this week of the project has made me realize that arranging chorales for flute choir would bring me a lot of enjoyment and sound really cool if I could get ahold of a contrabass flute.
